To your surprise, the area that needs stability exercises may not even be the part of your body that hurts!
I want to tell you about a patient I recently had in the clinic. “Mike” was a high school baseball player with shoulder pain. His shoulder was stiff and painful. With further testing, we determined his shoulder was moving TOO MUCH, and the muscles of his shoulder tightened up to try to protect his body from injury.
Instead of stretching, we needed to work on the strength of his arm as well as his core/trunk. Within a month, he was playing baseball without thinking about his shoulder.
This same scenario is common in other sports as well, particularly gymnastics and dance.
So how do you know if you need stability or mobility? This is something a physical therapist can help you determine.
