These are basic survival instincts that are part of your body. Your brain will decide to feel pain if it thinks that is what is best for survival, while it may "tune out" the pain if it thinks that is more beneficial (that's why you hear stories about soldiers who didn't realized they sustained a gunshot wound till long after a battle...their brains decided they had a better chance of surviving if it ignored the excruciating pain.)
Below is a video with a fantastic depiction of how pain works in our bodies, including explaining the difference between short-term pain and chronic pain. I think you will find it useful and informative as its explains how we can overcome the patterns of pain that can be debilitating.
It's worth 5 minutes to check it out, especially if you or someone you know is suffering from chronic pain.
