These are basic survival instincts that are part of your body. Your brain will decide to feel pain if it thinks that is what is best for survival, while it may "tune out" the pain if it thinks that is more beneficial (that's why you hear stories about soldiers who didn't realized they sustained a gunshot wound till long after a battle...their brains decided they had a better chance of surviving if it ignored the excruciating pain.)
